By tradition, Geisha girls started their training at a very early age.  Some girls live in what they call a geisha house or okiya starting from birth it is believed that this was not a common practice for most geisha girls.  More than likely if your mother was a geisha then you as a girl would also grow up to be a geisha called a heiress.

A maiko or a young girl who is training to be a geisha is called a minarai. But before she can start her training she must find a one-see who will act like an older geisha sister who will be her mentor.  It is this older sister’s responsibility to bring this young girl into a full bloom geisha.  By doing this the young girl will gain insight of the job that she will have most of her life.
